The Department of Music Sociology is devoted to theoretical and empirical research into the interdependencies between music and society, with a focus on the changes in musical and cultural life that are being brought about through social, cultural, political, economic, and technological developments in both the past and the present. These changes are observed in areas such as the production and reception/acquisition of music, the music and cultural labour markets, and cultural and media policy, as well as within specific musical genres and scenes, and are analysed with regard to social inequality dimensions (gender, class, age, ethnicity/race, etc.). Interdisciplinarity, national and international cooperative arrangements, and a focus on cultural and societal relevance are fundamental to the department. With its research focuses and projects, the department is pursuing its goal of further developing music sociology both theoretically and empirically, while increasingly anchoring it in the national and international research landscape as an independent interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary area of study.
